An elk in the Cataloochee Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains. In 2001, 25 of the creatures were reintroduced to the National Park, and again in 2002 with 27 more. It was almost pitch black when I took this photo. I had to rest the camera on top of the car and use an extremely slow shutter speed. They’ve been known to be aggressive, and it was crucial for me to be hasty while also taking my time.
